The Golden Vlog // November

I seriously can't believe that it's time for the Golden Vlog again...and that we've already hit mid-November!  To be honest, I kind of got a bit of the holiday fever yesterday....my boss gave me a spruce-scented candle the other day and now our office smells like a Christmas tree forest...pretty great, if you ask me!

Anyway...this month's Golden Vlog is all about work and jobs!  Watch below to hear more about what I do for work now, what my first job was, and to see my special guest on this month's vlog!

The Golden Vlog // October

I'm so excited for this month's Golden Vlog because a) I missed September; b) there's a fun giveaway going on this month; and c) Faith has put together a really fun team of hosts for this link-up moving forward!  I've been given the opportunity to join Faith and this team to host the Golden Vlog each month, and I'm really pumped to get to know these girls better and plan out future prompts for this fun link-up!

It's always really cool to get to know your favorite bloggers and blogging friends via video, and the Golden Vlog is perfect for that!  If you haven't ever joined in, here's the scoop:  each month, our team will be putting together a theme and series of questions, which we'll announce as the date for the next link-up gets closer.  Sometimes the questions are silly and sometimes they're serious.  You film a short vlog of yourself answering the prompts, and then post and link-up with us!  The link-up goes live on the second Thursday of each month!

This month, we're going deep and talking about insecurity.  Watch the video to hear about one insecurity that I've struggled with.

Here are the Rules . . .
1. You must follow your hosts on at least ONE form of social media to linkup w/ us.

2. We want to see your face! How many times you roll your eyes, and if you talk with your hands! So link up a post featuring your VLOG answering this months questions! The Guys Behind the Blog // September

It's time for another Guys Behind the Blog, and I'm so excited because this time, I'm welcoming my husband to the blog!  (That's really fun to say.)

If this is your first time finding this link-up, here's the run down:  each month, Laura of According to Laura Jean and I come up with five questions that we want your guys to answer.  You sit down and interview your boyfriend/husband/fiance in whatever straightforward or sneaky way you want (casual dinner conversation, a full-on video interview, emailing him the questions...whatever works!), and then on the last Thursday of the month, we post a link up where we want to see what your guys have to say!  The link up stays open for a whole week and you can join in at any time!  It's a fun way to get your guy involved in the blog world, and we always have fun getting to know one another's other halves a little bit better!

So without further ado...here's what AJ has to say about desert islands, his dream job, and why we can never decide on dinner plans...

1 // What's the silliest thing you and your significant other have needed to compromise on?
Hmm...I'm not sure.  We have to compromise on who has to make the decision on what we're doing for dinner almost every night.  We're the most indecisive people to ever walk the earth.

2 // If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 must haves would you bring with you?

My wife (though I guess that's probably not good for you), a copy of The Martian because I could read that a million times, and a cookbook centered on coconuts, because I assume they would be plentiful.

3 // Talents aside, what is your dream job?

What my degree is in...music production and stuff.  If money wasn't a factor, I'd want to own my own studio.

4 // What are three things on your bucket list?

To go to Europe at some point in my life...that seems like a fun thing that people do.To live in Montana, because there are no people there, and that's my favorite kind of people.
To win a Grammy at some point for something, even if it's just like I got someone coffee while they were making an album.

5 // What kind of date is your favorite to go on with your significant other? (Romantic, fun, spontaneous, etc.)

Spontaneous!  Crazy short trips are usually my favorite.  A few days ago, Betsy randomly said "Let's go to the beach!" and we couldn't because I had worship team practice, but I wish we had...that would have been fun.

And
here are our questions for October's link up!  The October post will go live on Thursday, October  29th and stay open through November 6th!  Now grab your guy and join in with us and submit your link below!  This month will be open through next Friday.

1 // We’re headed into fall, which means cooler temps for most of us…are you a warm weather or cold weather kind of guy?

2 // What's the best Halloween costume you've ever worn?
3 // What's your favorite Halloween candy?
4 // What are your favorite parts of fall (ex: football, the weather, Thanksgiving, etc)?
5 // How do you feel about pumpkin spice lattes? (As a joke question hahaha)

The Guys Behind the Blog // August Edition

Hey friends!  I'm taking a break from all of these awesome guest posts (thanks SOOO much to these girls!) and dropping in with this month's Guys Behind the Blog!  I'm so excited to be marrying AJ tomorrow.  (Holy. Cow.), and so in the spirit of celebrating wedding week, Laura and I decided to theme this month's questions around love!  So grab your guy and join us this week for our fun little link-up!

1. How did you meet your significant other?
We met working at our church! We worked in the youth department and we were a great team.. So we figured that that would translate well into a relationship. It was all business and I was very cool/smooth the whole time it was all developing... of course

2. What is your top love language? What is your significant other's love language?
I don’t even really remember. But since it IS wedding week for us, I will say that it was Betsy. #BrowniePoints

3. If you're engaged or married, how did you propose? If you are not, how did you ask your girl out?
My love languages are Quality time and Physical touch, and Betsy’s are Quality time and Acts of Service.

4. Share a funny wedding story with us - it could be from your own or one you attended.
This was not funny at the time, and is still not funny to me... But we went to the wedding of a few church friends a while back and during the bouquet toss, Betsy of course was in the right place at the right time and caught the flying flowers. Being extroverted as she is, of course, when they had called for the ladies to come up for the toss she went up without much hassle. After she caught the bouquet and the newly married couple were preparing for that weird garter thing that people do, I was putting up a fight and very adamant that I wouldn’t play along. Right as they were about to start, I thought I was home free still sitting at our table when all of a sudden Betsy’s uncle yelled out in front of like 200 people calling me out and making me the center of attention... which I hate. OF COURSE I ended up with the garter, after everyone else in the group of guys dodged it.. Worst Wedding Experience EVER.

(Can you tell he's an introvert?)

5. On the topic of love, who was your childhood crush?
I hired a team of people (aka family) to help convert our church’s worship center after the last Christmas eve service. It was all decked out and pretty and stuff and we added tons of candles down the aisle to make it super nice and fire hazardy. We had my aunt, who is Betsy’s boss, send her off on some mindless task far away from that room so that she didn’t stumble in... and I played some pretty music through the speakers. Then we called her down into the worship center, she didn’t realize what was happening at first, and then immediately started crying haha. It was a lot of fun to plan and I had a lot of great people and family members convert the room as fast as possible ... all so I could stumble over my words and only pray that Betsy understood the words coming out of my mouth.

We want to hear from you! What are you dying to know about the guys behind the blogs? What is a funny question you want us to ask your guy? What is your favorite ice breaker question? September's questions for The Guys Behind the Blog will be completely reader submitted so get your thinking caps on and ask away. Please submit your questions using the form below or here.We will choose our favorites and announce the top five questions on Monday, September 14th if you'd like to link-up with us on Thursday, September 24th.

The Guys Behind the Blog // July Edition

It's so hard to believe that yet another month has come and gone!  I'm a little bit saddened that the bulk of summer is behind us, but I can't lie, I'm so excited because it means that our wedding is less than a month away!  Just four weeks from tomorrow, I'll be walking down the aisle toward AJ.

(Confession time:  I've always had this thing where I get sad at the end of vacation or a holiday.  Not just like "oh, that's sad that it's coming to an end," but a deep ache where I really feel saddened by it being over...I've been that way since I was little and I'm already feeling that a little bit about our wedding!  That is, until I think about the fact that the marriage part is what I'm really excited for, and then I just can't wait all over again!)

Next time AJ is on the blog will be our next Guys Behind the Blog August 27, the last day of him being a single guy...but for this month, we're talking about the way to our guys' hearts....through their stomachs!  We're getting into the details of what makes our men swoon and what makes them squeamish when it comes to food...so check out AJ's answers below, and then link up with Laura and I for The Guys Behind the Blog, July edition!

1 // What is your all time favorite food?
My favorite food kind of depends on the day… But right now my favorite food is Blueberry pie as made by my lovely fiancé. It’s really the best and probably the main reason that I decided to propose way back when!

2 // Who is the cook between you and your significant other?
We are both the cook. She can do everything, and I choose not to do anything the way that you’re supposed to do it… So I think we make a pretty good team. And also she is ok with cooking by my main rule which is “If you don’t make a mess, You’re not doing it right”.

3 // What is the weirdest thing you have ever eaten?
I ate alligator once, Which is super weird for me but I think some people in the south would disagree.  I also ate Zebra once at some weird event… The alligator was like tough chicken and the zebra was really good. This confirms my suspicion that we only eat cows and chickens because they don’t bite the way that alligators do and zebras are way faster than cows!

4 // Are there any foods that you absolutely detest?
There is only really one food that I detest I think… I should clarify, I don’t WANT to detest it … I have tried really hard to be friends with it … But every time I try I feel like the relationship just leaves a bad taste in my mouth (HA! GET IT??) … That food is green beans. And Green Beans, If you’re reading this I want you to know that I still have the upmost respect for you.

5 // What is your favorite local, little-known, or hole in the wall place to eat?
It runs in my family to love what most people would consider awful little hole in the wall diner’s and restaurants so this is a great question. One of my favorite little places back home in Reading would be the West Reading Diner. It’s not really that bad in terms of being a hole.. But It is small and holds a lot of memories for me of being in a band and going to get diner food late at night after shows. Also, I ate there with Betsy and some friends a few years ago…. We weren’t even dating yet!! ;) In Boston I think my favorite little place to eat is this place called the “Hidyan Cafe”. It’s just a tiny little sandwich shop on the corner of a street in my neighborhood and they make food just like another sandwich shop called “May’s” that’s on the corner in the neighborhood that I grew up in back home! They also make the BEST froyo at the Hidyan Cafe and I want it right now……. So I’m gonna go……

(I don't often comment on his answers, but I feel like I need to say two things:  when we cook together, he is very messy, and he likes it that way. (And I follow him around cleaning up behind him, but we'll just let him think that I'm "ok" with his little rule.)  And secondly, I would have to disagree with him on the West Reading Diner...it is definitely a hole and I've never had worse home fries than the ones I had the night we ate there with some friends before we were dating.)

Well, that wraps up July!  The link-up will be open below through next Friday,  so join in on the fun!  Interview your guy and then link up below!  And make note of the following questions for next month's link-up, which will open on Thursday, August 27!

August Link-Up Questions:
1 // Share a funny wedding story with us - it could be from your own or one you attended.
2 // On the topic of love, who was your childhood crush?
3 // What is your top love language? What is your significant other's love language?
4 // How did you meet your significant other?
5 // If you're engaged or married, how did you propose? If you're not, how did you ask your girl out?

The Golden Vlog // July

It's time for July's Golden Vlog...and I'm excited to be back!  This month, Faith and her co-host, Kenji, have teamed up to come up with a fun list of questions all about what's in your purse!  I'm excited to be getting back to the Golden Vlog after taking last month off...and these questions this month are so fun!  So, click play below to hear about my bag and what's in it!

The Guys Behind the Blog // June Edition

It's that time again!  It's really hard for me to believe that we're at the end of another month. June has been such a crazy month, with so many unexpected (and frankly, unwelcome) twists and turns, that it seems like it just flew by.  I'm choosing to believe that July will hold only the best things for our family and church community!

It's also hard to believe that AJ and I will be getting married in just two months!  As our day gets closer, its getting harder and harder to be apart, but the countdown is on and I couldn't be more excited!

I love when AJ takes over the blog...this is one of my favorite posts every month, and his answers this month made me laugh! Check them out below, and then go check out Laura's post as well!

1 // What’s the best vacation you’ve ever been on?
Well, my family is obsessed with Disney and we go to Disney World every few years. The last time that we went there was probably my favorite vacation ever. It’s hard not to love being in Disney World and staying at one of their resorts to begin with, but also my, then, girlfriend came down and tried to surprise me. It didn’t work because I am all knowing, but I appreciated the attempt and I still love her. … It was Betsy by the way…

2 // If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you go?
This is the type of question that, depending on the day, merits a different answer from me. Today, I would say I want to be in Arizona. Or just somewhere like that. Where it’s warm, but not awfully humid.. because right now Boston is like a sauna and I hate it the moist. See what I did there? …

3 // Are there any summer traditions that you have or would like to start? (think things like big picnics, summer activities, bonfires, or day trips!)
I would love to make frequent beach trips a thing… Not like staying over night, but just going down for a Saturday and coming back… cuz that’s much cheaper :) I would also want to start doing bonfires once a week because I LOVE bonfires! … If it were legal to do beach bonfires on the east coast that would be even better!!

4 // The 4th of July is coming up…what’s a must-have picnic or BBQ food for you?
Oh man. This question is making me hungry as I type… The one thing that is a must have at a 4th of July BBQ is my mom’s Strawberry Pretzel Dessert. What it lacks in a creative name, it makes up for in pure deliciousness and joy! It’s basically what it sounds like… Strawberry and Jello on top with some sort of cool whip concoction underneath and crushed pretzels on the bottom. PURE. JOY.

5 // Think about your ideal vacation…are you in a cozy cabin, camping in a tent, or hanging in a hotel?
Why would you even suggest camping?? Are you kidding me?? That’s not a vacation .. that’s work … and also bugs.. and I’m not about bugs.. or bears. I would just want to be somewhere warm and awesome and in a hotel or cabin or somewhere where there aren’t many people. :)
______________________________________

And that's it, folks...June's Guys Behind the Blog!  I'm really glad that the best vacation he's ever taken was the one I surprised him on!  But I'm also still a little bummed (3 years later) that he figured it all out...I mean...I flew all the way to Florida!  Sheesh.  He's tough to surprise...though I did successfully fly to Boston and surprise him last October, so I'll take it!

This month's link-up is open through next Friday, July 3rd, so join in with us any time!  I hope you will consider joining us for this month's link-up and sharing your significant other with us.

July's Guys Behind the Blog is all about food! Yum, what guy wouldn't be on board for that? It is scheduled for Thursday, July 30th and will stay open through Friday, August 7th. If you want to get a head start, here are the questions for next month:

1 // What is your all time favorite food?
2 // Who is the cook between you and your significant other?
3 // What is the weirdest thing you have ever eaten?
4 // Are there any foods that you absolutely detest?
5 // What is your favorite local, little-known, or hole in the wall place to eat?

Now add your link below and check out some of the other Guys Behind the Blogs!

The Guys Behind the Blog // May Edition

Hey friends!  It's time for one of my favorite posts of the month...The Guys Behind the Blog!  If this is your first time catching one of these posts, then here's a bit of background...I started The Guys Behind the Blog back in January because I had been nagging my fiancé, AJ, to take over this space and finally, I got him to agree to an interview.  I figured it would be fun to have other bloggers join in and interview their guys as well, and the idea has stuck, so it's become a monthly link-up!  (It's open for the next week, so you still have plenty of time to join in with us!)

But this month, I have some exciting news!  One of my dear blogger friends, Laura Jean, has agreed to begin co-hosting The Guys Behind the Blog with me!  So she and her husband, Jacob, will be joining AJ and I in hosting this little par-tay every month...you can stop by either of our blogs to join in on the fun!  If you haven't read any of Jacob's posts yet, add them to your must-read list right now. His answers almost always have me laughing out loud, and I dearly hope that AJ and I can spend some time with Laura & Jacob someday!  (Laura, instead of moving to the Twin Cities, I think you guys should head to Philly!)

Alright....so let's get to it!  We asked the guys five random questions this month and AJ's answers had me giggling...I hope you enjoy them too!
______________________________________

1 // What is your favorite family tradition?
My family doesn’t really have that many traditions. I would say that the closest thing to a tradition that we really have is our christmas eve party that we host at our house for all of our family and church friends. That one is super fun.

2 // Who's your male celebrity crush?

I really have a lot of celebrity crushes.. but my top two are Tina Fey, and Jimmy Fallon. And before anyone looks at me weird (or whatever) I’d like to publicly say that I am of the opinion that guys can have GUY celebrity crushes too, so put away that judgement. And when Tina and Jimmy hosted Weekend update on SNL together, it was obviously the work of the Lord.

3 // What song best sums you up?

I’m obviously a very complex person, with complicated thoughts, dreams and aspirations… So this one is really hard. I mean, How could you possibly sum up each small piece of my soul with ONE single song?? …  "Crayons Can Melt on Us for All I Care" by Relient K.

4 // What three things do you think of the most each day?

1. Well Obviously my Fiance…all the time because she’s cute.
2.  I also spend a lot of time thinking about school .. obviously, since I spend most of my time in class right now.
3. And finally I spend a lot of time thinking about how I shouldn’t even be in school any more and I want it to be over so I can get married … And that leads to number 1 again!

5 // What is your most embarrassing memory?

Probably the time that I was singing in a competition with my sister and my voice cracked really really bad … Luckily I wasn’t too invested in the performance and just kind of laughed it off. So maybe it’s not all that embarrassing … Idk… either way here’s the video clip :)
______________________________________

Ok, Betsy again....I just have to say that I think this might be my favorite month yet.  AJ had to email me his answers from Boston and after I clicked on the link in his answer to number 5, I texted him and said "Were you being snarky on Guys Behind the Blog?!"  haha...his sense of humor is definitely one of the reasons I love him!

Add your link below, and make note of these questions for the June link-up, which will go live on June 25th and stay open through July 3rd!

1 // What’s the best vacation you’ve ever been on?
2 // If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you go?
3 // Are there any summer traditions that you have or would like to start? (think things like big picnics, summer activities, bonfires, or day trips!)
4 // The 4th of July is coming up…what’s a must-have picnic or BBQ food for you?
5 // Think about your ideal vacation…are you in a cozy cabin, camping in a tent, or hanging in a hotel?

The Golden Vlog // May

I'm super excited about this month's Golden Vlog because we're talking about one of my favorite things...summer vacation!  If you're not familiar with The Golden Vlog, here are the details:  it's run by Faith of Life with Mrs. G & the Artist.  Each month, Faith chooses a topic and sends out a list of questions to those who have linked up in the past.  We all create a little video of ourselves answering the questions and then link-up!  It's a fun way to connect with other bloggers...I always love seeing videos of blogging friends because it feels like I actually know them in real life then!

So, without further ado, here is this month's Golden Vlog...watch below to find out what I did as a kid for summer vacation, where AJ and I are going on our honeymoon, and what some of my favorite trips have been!

DO YOU HAVE ANY SUMMER TRAVEL PLANS FOR THIS YEAR?

Hospitality is a Posture of the Heart

Confession:  This is a repost.  But when we chose "Hospitality" as this month's Peony Project link-up prompt, I couldn't help but want to resurrect this one.  This is one of my favorite posts that I've ever written.  It allowed me to process the idea of hospitality in a totally new way and its definitely a reminder I need often.  So I hope you won't mind that I'm reusing my own words, but I honestly don't think I could write another (better) post on hospitality if I tried.

I've never particularly liked the story of Mary and Martha.  Probably because I can totally relate to Martha, and yet Mary is the one Jesus praises.  It always feels a little like He's chastising me when He says "Mary has chosen what is better" (Luke 10:42).

Truthfully, I feel bad for Martha!  She was just trying to be a good hostess after all.  I'd do the same.  The meal needed to be prepared, the table to be set, she probably had to tidy up a little bit.  She had opened her home not to just any guy, but the Lord...and I'm sure she wanted to make a good impression.

But when we get down to it, hospitality boils down to one simple truth: everyone wants to be invited in.  We've all been there...maybe you've been the new girl hoping for a friend or maybe you've seen the new girl and felt the tug to include her.  And when it comes to Mary and Martha, the reality is that things do need to get done.

But you can't keep working for people to be invited in.  If you keep washing the dishes or clearing the table, everyone else is going to feel like they need to be working too or not be included.

This post is part of The Peony Project's monthly link-up.

I don't know abut you, but I was raised to always offer to help.  And so, when I go to a party or gathering and the host stands up to start the clean-up process, my instinct is to pitch in.  And when I'm the host, I will often begin cleaning up when my guests are still around the table.

Don't get me wrong...I think the conversations that happen at the sink, with one person washing dishes and another drying, can be life-giving and relationship-forming.  My mom will tell you that she bonded with her sisters-in-law over sinks full of dirty dishes after family gatherings.  And watching them in the kitchen (and joining them) is now one of my favorite things about those family dinners.

But when we look deeper at the story of Mary and Martha, it's not just about doing work versus sitting at the table and spending time with others.  Martha comes to Jesus, with Mary at His feet, asking Him to send her sister to help her prepare the meal.  She was so worried by the work to be done that she couldn't see the importance in what her sister had chosen.

And when I examine my own heart, it's here that I can relate the most to Martha.  Because often, when I'm standing at that kitchen sink and there are people at the table who haven't offered to help, my heart turns bitter.  Thoughts of "why aren't they helping?" and "can't they see what work needs to be done?" run through my mind.

True hospitality is a posture of the heart.  It's not enough to just open your doors and invite people into your home.  No matter how pinterest-perfect and carefully planned a gathering is, making people feel welcome goes beyond a picturesque table setting and a delicious dinner followed by warm cups of coffee.

In reality, it doesn't matter how well you prepare, what people will remember is how well you cared.

There's beauty in sharing your home and your food.  Impact in being generous with your money and your time.  Inviting people into your life, no matter how messy and imperfect it may be at times, is worth it.

But it can be so much better, so much more impactful, so much more beautiful, if you "choose what is better."
Choose the conversation over the task list.
Choose to listen when the dishes are screaming at you.
Choose to include people in the relationship instead of the work.

I'm not sure that the story of Mary and Martha will ever not make me feel uncomfortable.  And that's probably the point.  Because for me, it's easy to see the work to be done and do it.  It stretches me more to make the small talk and ask the good and hard questions.  But washing dishes isn't what Jesus asks us to do.  He asks us to take the time to see the need, to see the person, and to be His hands and feet.

What about you?  How do you embrace and exhibit hospitality in your life?

The Guys Behind the Blog // April

I can't believe it's been over a week since I last posted.  Goodness, April has been a crazy month.  I have some fun stuff planned for the next few weeks here at Heavens to Betsy, and we're kicking off those things with today's Guys Behind the Blog link-up!

If this is your first time reading one of these posts, here's a little background:  each month, I ask my fiancé, AJ, five questions and invite you to do the same with your guy!  The link-up typically happens the last Thursday of the month (we moved it back a week this month) and stays open for a week, and it's a ton of fun!

I'm currently in Boston visiting AJ for the week, so we sat down and I asked him this month's questions so you all can get to know him a bit better!

1 // Has Starbucks ever spelled your name wrong on a cup? If yes, what's the craziest way that
someone has spelled it?
Yep.  Somebody at a Starbucks here in Boston misunderstood me and wrote "Asia."

2 // Who would play your fiancee in a movie or TV show about your lives?
I want to say Zooey Deschanel because you kind of look like her and she has big eyes and stuff, but I also don't want to say her because she kind of annoys me.  Personality-wise, I want to say Tina Fey because you have a similar sense of humor I think.  So maybe a mix between the two.

3 // What is your proudest accomplishment?
Locking you down.  Definitely...making this official.

4 // What is your favorite holiday and why?
Fourth of July, because I like the summer and we always play volleyball, which I love.  Ooh, but then also Thanksgiving because the Eagles play and it's nice to have everybody around.  Both of those.

5 // What is your favorite breed of dog?  If you don't have a favorite breed, describe the characteristics of your ideal dog (or cat)! I like bloodhounds.  Betsy does not.  There will be a war over this.

And there you have it, folks!  I hope you'll consider joining in with us this month for The Guys Behind the Blog!  You can see past posts here, and you can hop on board this month by interviewing your guy and posting anytime in the next week!

May's Guys Behind the Blog is scheduled for Thursday, May 28 and will stay open through Friday, June 5.  If you want to get a head start, here are the questions:

1 // What is your favorite family tradition?
2 // Who's your male celebrity crush?
3 // What song best sums you up?
4 // What three things do you think of the most each day?
5 // What is your most embarrassing memory?

Do you have a question that you'd like to see featured in an upcoming Guys Behind the Blog?  Submit it here!
(P.S. There will not be a war over the bloodhound thing...unless we live on a farm someday, we're not getting a bloodhound.  End. of. story.)

Peace in Chaos // Finding Peace in Scripture

This post is part of The Peony Project's monthly link-up.

If you read my post last week, then you know that life has been a little bit hectic lately.  It's been the kind of hectic that's draining.  Worry hides around every turn and I'll be honest...it's hard to beat it down and to find peace.

I'm honestly not sure how anyone can face a cancer diagnosis (let alone two), or really, any kind of personal crisis, without Jesus.  Our faith and church community has sustained our family over the past two years, and I can't imagine going through all of this without knowing Him.

It can be really hard to find any sort of peace when your mind is plagued with concern or it's just elsewhere in general.  But if there's anything I've found to be tried-and-true in installing peace in my day-to-day over these past two years, it's memorizing Scripture.

If you grew up in church, you were probably given countless memory verses over the years to study and remember.  I've never been terribly with memorizing Scripture, but I've also never been so compelled to as I have the past few years.  In 2012, I led a missions trip to the Dominican Republic for our youth ministry.  We gave our students a list of verses to memorize and encouraged them that while they were praying with people in the DR, if they were at a loss for words, they could always pray Scripture.

Since my dad was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, we've attended our church's healing ministry for prayer nearly every Wednesday night.  Time and time again, as we've sat in a small room with a team of prayer warriors surrounding my dad, I've listened to people pray Scripture over him.  These experiences have only further confirmed the importance and power in praying through Scripture.

Chances are that if you've every been through anything difficult or have struggled with anything in your life (who hasn't?), then you've gone looking for verses that will bring you peace.  If I've learned anything in the past two years, it's that memorizing verses and repeating them over and over again to myself can bring the biggest sense of peace.

One of my favorites is Isaiah 26:3:  "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on  you, because he trusts in You." (ESV)

I think this verse encompasses the heart and power of memorizing Scripture:  keeping God's Word in your heart and mind helps you stay in His peace.  Even in the most turbulent of waters, there is a peace in knowing that Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and that this world is not our home.

Here are a few other verses that I have found comfort and peace in memorizing and calling on in the moments where I feel lost, sad, or helpless:

2 Corinthians 10:5:  We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up agains the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ. (NIV)

John 14:27:  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (NIV)

Philippians 4:6:  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (NIV)

Isaiah 54:10:  "Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the Lord, who has compassion on you. (NIV)

Matthew 11:28-30: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (NIV)

April Golden Vlog

I seriously don't even know how we got to April already!  Time is flying by and it's time for another round of the Golden Vlog with Faith over at Life with Mrs. G and the Artist!

Faith's questions this month are all about beauty.  Man, I get super uncomfortable when talking about myself and this subject!  I suspect we all do, though, right?  It's just an unnatural thing for me...having to choose features or things about myself that I love.  I'm not an insecure person, but I also don't love talking about myself.  Which I guess is weird since I'm a blogger and often write about myself.

Guys Behind the Blog // March

I'm so excited for another Guys Behind the Blog Link-up!  This fun little link up seems to be growing every month, and it's been fun to get to know your guys better in the process.  I hope you've been enjoying it too!

So this month, I convinced (ok, I sort of forced) AJ to sit down with me and let me interview him via video!  I believe that Madison was the one who came up with this idea (credit where credit is due!) and so I totally stole it.  This was fun for me, and I hope you enjoy watching it!  It seems like the last few seconds got a bit cut off, but basically, if you can get your guy to agree, you should vlog with us one month!!

There's still time to join in on our March link-up....it'll be open through next Friday.

This month's questions were:
1 // Do you have a good luck charm or ritual? (like a lucky coin, or you always used to listen to a certain pump-up song when you played sports in high school or college?)
2 // What is your favorite dish that your wife/fiance/girlfriend makes for you?  Do you have any fun memories of a time when she tried to cook and it totally flopped or does she get it right every time?
3 // What did you want to be when you were growing up?
4 // Which of the five senses is your strongest?
5 // Would you ever run for president?

March Guys Behind the Blog from Betsy Gettis on Vimeo.

And here are the prompts for April....mark your calendars for Thursday, April 23rd.  (We usually do the last Thursday in April, but since the last Thursday is also the last day of the month, I'm moving it back a week).  The link-up will be open through May 1, so join in with us any time during that week! And if you have ideas for questions for upcoming months, you can submit them here.

April's questions:
1 // Has Starbucks ever spellled your name wrong on a cup? If yes, what's the craziest way that someone has spelled it?
2 // Who would play your wife/fiance/girlfriend in a movie or TV show about your lives?
3 // What is your proudest accomplishment?
4 // What is your favorite holiday and why?
5 // What is your favorite breed of dog?  If you don't have a favorite breed, describe the characteristics of your ideal dog (or cat)!
